Serratula coronata L.

Flora Europaea

the Linnean original specimen proves that the Russian and Asian botanists are right in considering the Linnean binome and not the one of Andrae, Serratula wolffii used by the European literature, including Flora Europaea. It would not be good news for the Transylvanian naturalists since 'wolffii' comes from G. Wolff a prominent Transylvanian botanist of the XIXth century and 'locco classico' of the species is placed in the so well known to us 'Fanatele Clujului'. However, in the remained part of the Linnean herbarium from Sweden there is an individual classified by Linne himself as Serratula coronata L. which despite its leaves has anthodia which undoubtedly shows that it belongs to a variety of Serratula tinctoria L. Because of this mixture of two species Linne had made, the European botanists consider as valid the taxon Serratula wolffii Andrae.

This is a typical meadow-steppe grassland species from Moldavia and Transylvania which became extremely rare because of the plowing, overgrazing and ruderalization of these habitats. The populations from Transylvania are the western most from the entire range of the species.
